If the boiling is continued for longer time, the amount of SO3 vapour produced per metric tonne of oleum (fed to the boiler) will be more. However, this can result in a lower strength of the oleum leaving the boiler. Since oleums of strength below 20 % are very corrosive, this situation is to be avoided. Hence, from the practical point of view, the strengths of oleums are 28–32 % at inlet to the boiler and 22–23 % at exit from the boiler. (Please see pictorial # 2 and Fig. 1). The lean oleum from the exit exchanges heat with the incoming strong oleum for preheating before entry into the boiler.

In certain dye intermediates the higher strength Sulphuric Acid was found to be an essential part of the chemical reaction. This led to many of the Sulphuric Acid plants to manufacture “Fuming Sulphuric Acid” popularly known as Oleums. G. 3 Technical Considerations The initial product was in the range of 20–25 % Oleum which meant 20–25 % free SO3 dissolved in Sulphuric Acid. The basic reaction carried out in the Oleum Tower is absorption of SO3 in the Sulphuric Acid to form an adduct H2 SO4 þ SO3 ¼ H2 S2 O7 This would correspond to 45 % free SO3 dissolved in Sulphuric Acid.

Since the reaction is instantaneous and complete, the reactor volume is very small. However, oleum 25 % is used as a carrier to provide uniform mixing of liquid sulphur trioxide and liquid sulphur. Agitation with proper mechanical seal is provided to ensure complete reaction. 2 Thermodynamic and Kinetic Consideration of the Neat’s Process 29 The increase in molecules of SO2 by fifty percent enables build-up of pressure without use of compressor. 1 gives condensation temperature of pure sulphur dioxide at different pressures.
